A long-waited groundbreaking has taken place near Clappison's Corners.

Wednesday morning's event on Highway 5 West marks the start of construction on the new 19 million dollar North Wentworth Twin Pad Arena which is expected to open next year.

Flamborough Councillor Margaret McCarthy says it will answer a tremendous need for new ice surfaces in the community.

In addition to the twin-pads, the facility will boast six change rooms per arena and seating for about one thousand spectators.

The city's share of the project has been funded through development charges and a Town of Flamborough fund designed for a new arena.  The province also chipped in two million dollars.
