The Law of Least Effort

Posted 7/29/2010 4:20:00 PM
I  don't read a lot of self-help books but I do subscribe to Deepak Chopra's 4th Spiritual Law of Success - The Law of Least Effort.

The Law is based on the fact that nature functions with effortless ease.  If you observe the world around you, you'll see that the least effort is expended.  Grass doesn't try to grow, it just grows.  Fish don't try to swim, they just swim.  The Earth doesn't try to spin on its own axis; it is the nature of the Earth to spin.  It is the nature of the Sun to shine - and the stars to sparkle in the night sky.  And it is Human Nature to make our dreams manifest into physical form... easily and effortlessly.

And then I buy this carton of milk... and try to open it... easily and effortlessly.    ##@%$**!

Crop Circles

Posted 7/28/2010 4:00:00 PM
So, I'm out there cutting the lawn in my backyard yesterday and come across one patch where it looks like a crop circle.  Seriously, some force has bent the blades of grass into a swirling concentric design.  There are a few spots where it looks like a skunk has been rooting for grubs but the overall patch is much larger than a skunk.  It looks like a deer has been sleeping there.

And then it hits me - the only reason I can even see the difference at all is because I haven't cut the lawn in 2 and a half weeks.  The grass was getting too tall.  The crop circle remains a mystery but I'm sure it won't be a reoccurring phenomenon because I've vowed to mow the lawn more regularly... or get a goat.

Morons!

First of all, let me just say that I have a bike - a relatively new one - and a helmet - and one of my favourite things to do on a summer weekend is ride the trails of the Don Valley.  You can bike from Edwards Gardens all the way down to the Lakeshore and connect with the Martin Goodman trail for even longer rides.  But that's not the point.

This week, bike lanes were installed on Jarvis Street from Charles down to Queen - taking away the reversible middle lane for vehicular traffic and adding to the chaos in and out of the downtown core.

There's no question that our city needs good alternatives to cars when it comes to moving people.  The TTC and Go Transit are a good start but the idea of thousands of Torontonians riding bikes to work is naive.    By the city's ...
